- Remmi Franklin on her new series

Remmi Franklin has always known that she needed to create art. Raised on the north shore of Long Island, NY, art has always been Remmi’s refuge from life’s ordinary yet challenging struggles. It could be described as an inner voice demanding expression … perfectly complementing a life-long passion for learning new techniques and uncovering hidden potential.

Maryland Institute College of Art taught Remmi the value of acquiring the skills she would need to develop her own artistic style. That education, supplemented by time in California during the 1970’s, allowed her to explore a number of artistic models including glass blowing. Settling in Boston, a post-graduate education in graphic design provided a concrete way to earn a living while continuing with her own vision of life as an artist. While raising a family in the suburbs, she managed to continue to pursue her art in diverse ways including tutoring, scenic design, web design and interior design.

Today Remmi’s artistry is distinctly her own. Having a large studio allows her to explore and display myriad processes including collage, tromp d’oeil wooden boxes and plates, mirrors, computer art, and abstract aerial representation. She cites her best and worst quality as an artist as “continually breaking every rule.” While she is stirred by the images and techniques of Yves Tanguy, Georgia O’Keeffe and Dali, it would be hard to find specific reference to them in her work. Rather, she allows herself to be influenced by each of their styles, creating her own form that is both fun and profound. Remmi’s daughter, Addi Lyon, a RISD graduate, shared a studio with Remmi until her unexpected death in 2005. Addi’s inspiration is still present in much of Remmi’s work.

Remmi is joined at her new studio with her dogs, Bug and Mercury. She fills out her busy family life with skeet shooting, gardening and cooking.
